A Habitat Garden Educator in the Neighborhood

Habitat gardens are gardens that are created to offer a habitat for local wildlife. This is an eco-friendly practice that involves the community and homeowners in providing a healthier environment not only for them, but mainly for the wildlife that surrounds them. Native plants are the main focus of these unique gardens. Together with natural landscaping, the utilization of local plant life attracts the prominent wildlife of the area, and acts as a safe haven for them. Although a habitat garden can be grown anywhere, they are usually seen in public community spaces. A Habitat Garden Educator leads a community in the creation of these magnificent man made ecosystems.

The educator is tasked with teaching the community about the science behind habitat gardens and what is needed to create one. Neighborhood residents take part in the maintenance of the garden as a community, and usually congregate on specific days to learn and listen to the habitat expert. A Habitat Educator teaches the community how to offer an ecosystem for birds, insects, mammals and other creatures within the boundaries of the garden. They also give insight on appropriate plant selections for the environment in which the garden is located. Some educators even provide seeds and plants to start the garden off with.

The goal of a Habitat Educator is to inform the public of the benefits of manmade ecosystems and the instruction on how to build one properly. They focus on the importance of including elements that provide dwellings and hiding for prey animals. As with any ecosystem a habitat garden houses both prey and predatory creatures. The dwellings and hiding spots keep a natural balance, as it lowers the chances of a creature becoming victim to a predator. These particulars are some of the many ways Habitat Educators teach individuals about habitat gardens.

Some communities prefer animal specific oriented gardens as opposed to a wide array of species. An educator can provide knowledge on which plants and berries attract certain animals. Fruits are also a viable means of attracting the species gardeners would like to see hopping or flying around. An educator also stresses the importance of careful selection when it comes to planting seeds. Although gardeners may plan for specific animals to be the inhabitants of their gardens, other creatures may also wander in. It is important to provide feeding grounds for the larger populations of species. Changing their diets by only providing food for specific animals instead of the ecosystem as a whole; will provoke unwanted adaptations and an unnatural environment. Habitat Educators are essential in the art of manmade ecosystems and work together with communities as well as individuals to help create and maintain natural environments for the surrounding wildlife.
