Becoming An Outreach Coordinator is Best Suited For Those Outgoing and Active

If you are the type of person who likes to stay active, and if you like humanitarian-type work, then you should consider becoming an Outreach Coordinator. An outreach coordinator usually works for some type of non-profit outreach organization, perhaps a medical facility that offers free healthcare to those who can't afford to pay, or a senior citizen's center that offers free lunches to the elderly. There are all types of outreach programs out there if you look hard enough and the people they want to hire are individuals who enjoy the work that they do and who are dedicated to improving the lives of those in need of their services.

An outreach coordinator is often called upon to organize fundraisers, plan media events, and may even be asked to solicit donations or to participate in marketing and sales plans related to fundraising efforts. In addition he or she may be expected to host events or act as spokesperson for the organization. In other words, if you're shy about public speaking or if you're not willing to work nights or weekends (as that's when most fundraisers are held), this probably isn't the job for you.

Travel may be required for this job. Many outreach coordinators, especially those who work for global outreach organizations, often travel to far-off destinations to observe and report on progress. More often than not, these far-off destinations will be underpoverished countries, as that's where most global outreach programs are directed towards. As a result, living conditions are substandard, even for those who are there to help. There may be very little fresh water, no plumbing, or no electricity. Conditions are harsh at the best of times, so if you're thinking of joining an outreach program that offers global assistance to underpriviledged countries, be prepared for the worst and think heavily about what may be expected of you before joining.

Pay varies from organization to organization, but usually averages around $47,000, according to Indeed.com, a job-posting website. The usual education required is a Bachelor's degree in social work or a related field, but occasionally an organization will hire an outreach coordinator without college-level education, provided the applicant has experience in the field. Outreach organizations vary widely with their requirements and job expectations, so if this is a field you want to get into, but have some reservations about travel or other potential job duties, it may be possible to find a job as an outreach coordinator that matches your expectations for the job.

To sum up, becoming an outreach coordinator is certainly a worthwhile career move if you like helping people and if you're outgoing enough to handle the media end of things. It may be a challenge at times, but the emotional rewards are worth it.
