Biologists Fight to Find Earths Cure

Science as a whole has many fields and branches. A scientist can specialize in fields that study fossils deep in our planets soil, like paleontologist. Or they can even study the far reaches of space, like an astrophysicist. Although their concentrations are worlds apart, they are all still scientists that dedicate their lives to the study of the earth, its life, and they way it functions as a whole. No field benefits the earth better than biology. Biology is quintessentially the study of life. It ranges from the simplest, single celled life forms to the complicated structures of the human species. Biology also focuses on the interactions of life with the environment.

Biology is broken down into many branches including, molecular biology, zoology, and environmental biology and ecology. Environmental biologists have been studying organisms on Earth, and how they behave with their natural and manmade environments. Planet Earth is in a crisis and faces many rapid changes that could potentially be dangerous to the life it contains. Polar bears in example are facing extinction with the melting ice caps. Global warming also threatens marine life, as even one degree in temperature change, can kill thousands of species dwelling in the oceans. Studying environmental biology is the key if scientists are to find a cure for our ailing Earth. Without its understanding, managing the world's natural issues would be impossible.

Biologists are struggling to maintain Earths biodiversity. They fight daily to save species that are threatened by extinction by using many modern methods. In Australia a select group of biologists are actively monitoring Monitor Lizards, by attaching temporary high definition critter cams to the lizards. By watching the live footage biologists can study their way of life, where they nest, and what they feed on. With this knowledge they can inform humans on how to help maintain and keep the species alive. Knowing what parts of the land to protect and preserve can ensure the lizards' dens are not trampled upon or destroyed leaving them vulnerable to extinction. Knowing what they feed on can better adjust how people manage the balance of the ecosystem, by informing them of which animals also need to be protected.

All over the world biologists are fighting to keep track of Earth's population as a whole. They utilize many methods from critter cams to the tagging of birds and whales. By tracking the animals' migratory routes they can select key locations to protect and preserve. Biologists have even taken up the fight to save mankind. With years of dedication, they have studied rainforest and other locations across the world in search for a cure for cancer. Currently The U.S. National Cancer Institute has identified and established three thousand plants that work against cancer cells. The majority of these cancer fighting plants come from rainforests. Organisms from rain forests make up twenty five percent of the active ingredients found in cancer fighting drugs.
