CSAP Society- Contaminated Sites Approved Professionals

In March 2007, the Contaminated Sites Approved Professionals Society was incorporated. The society is self regulated and has the authority to decide if a site is contaminated and review the investigation of certain sites. They oversee remediation plans, which is the renewing of something bad to something good. The CSAP Society is an independent society that makes sure that regulations are followed and that any acts are in accordance with existing laws. Members of CSAP are all approved professionals. They have to undergo strict technical testing and need to be qualified to recommend that the Ministry of Environment approve company applications. They deal with the investigation and remediation of sites. It is responsible to the Ministry of Environment, the public and industry. It provides required advice on policies set forth to ensure regulations.

In order to be a member according to the regulations members must...

- Accumulate at least 150 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) over each three-year period, and a minimum of 30 PDHs per year. PDH hours greater than that required to meet the annual requirement can be carried forward for a maximum of 2 years from the date of the activity;

- At anytime, the Society may require members to fulfill a specific requirement (e.g. complete or attend a specific course or seminar) within a defined time period

- A minimum of 100 hours of the required 150 PDHs must be earned in an area of Contaminated Sites assessment, management and /or remediation; remaining 50 hours may be in an area indirectly or unrelated to contaminated sites but that supports the member's ability to practice competently and professionally (e.g. project management)

- Are responsible for maintaining records of PDHs and must provide the hours to the CSAP Society along with remittance of annual membership fees.

Formal activities are those activities provided as a structured course or program. Informal activities are those such as attendance at meetings of professional or technical associations or societies. Review and Recommendation is the submission of advice and recommendations to the Ministry of Environment. Participation activities are those that promote peer interaction and provide exposure to new ideas. Presentations are technical or professional presentations that you do outside your normal job functions. Contributions to Knowledge include publication of papers in a peer-reviewed technical journal.

Being part of the CSAP is no easy job; there are a lot of requirements. We can take comfort in the knowledge that the people who are making recommendations to the Minister of Environment are well-trained professionals. Our future environmental policies are in good hands.
