Certified Environmental Professionals for CanadaThere are a variety of certifications available for people to specialize in the environmental field. EP Environmental Professional Certification is the only designation of its kind in Canada. Organizations who directly affect the certification are: CECAB Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals BoardECO Canada Environmental Careers Organization NOS National Occupational Standards The CECAB is responsible for the evaluations and the final approval of candidates studying to obtain their Environmental Professionals (EP) in Canada It is a way for professionals to prove their unique environmental capabilities. The EP Certification was created to provide professional in the environmental field with certification that recognizes their specific environmental abilities. The recognized thing about the different levels of skills that will be achieved through environmental training is that the Canadian National Occupational Standards (NOS) allow professionals with certification to find environmental employment. NOS is a very detailed list that sets the standards and skills that showcase the levels of abilities that any professional in any field needs to achieve in order to maintain their designation of EP certification. These areas are a few that EPs may hold certification in: energy, education and training, fisheries and wildlife, site assessment and toxic dumpling grounds. Also the quality of the air, natural resources, policy and legislation, energy, health and safety, the quality of the water, toxic material management, research and development, education for public awareness. The Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals Board (CECAB) oversees the certifications. Making sure that environmental professional code ethics are maintained. The CECAB is responsible for the final decision by reviewing the certification requirements and seeing whether the candidate maintains the levels of skills required maintaining their designation. The certification does not just put a label on the professional but most of the clients do what is required as a risk based liability assurance clause. In today s society it has become more important for professionals to have some type of certification. If you have a formal degree and field experience is invaluable but combined with the EP certification you have a way of showing your talents that have been set by national standards. The approval board, the Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals Board oversees the approval and evaluation and management of Environmental Professionals in Canada. It is the final say in whether a candidate has the qualities required to receive certification of Environmental Professionals. It shows credibility for candidates on the basis and demonstration of their required level of competence. Those that receive the EP certification have shown that their knowledge and abilities surpass the National Occupational Standards (NOS) in other such areas as auditing the environment, the study of greenhouse gases, the management of resources, the sustainability of the environment and environmental management. The starting point for candidates is to obtain a certification of Environmental Professional in training (EPT). This is designed for those professionals that are working towards their EP Certification. It gives the ability for budding Environmental Professionals to find the needs of professional development. It allows access to more career options. The Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) created and manages the NOS to provide a guide as to what the skills and knowledge is required for EPTs to perform their specialized jobs in each environmental field. ECO Canada performs an update of the required standards in each field every five years so as to keep up with the ever-changing requirements of environmental careers.
