ELOSH Wild Population Monitoring

In this day and age wildlife monitoring and preservation is the best way to insure certain endangered animals still exist for the next generation. While we cannot save every animal that is endangered, we can certainly try to. One of the animals that are currently being protected is the Eastern Loger Head Shrike. This bird is a Canadian Native. As a bird with a beautiful song this bird is admired by bird lovers worldwide.

Now found in only a select few locations within Canada, these endangered animals can be found in select pockets in Ontario and Manitoba. Each of these locations are closely monitored by conservation officers in order to prevent hunting or interference. These birds are marked in order to protect their numbers and watch for any decline of the birds.

Nobody really knows what has caused the dramatic decline of these birds, as they are not a heavily hunted species nor do they have a history of disease. Some think that the building and creating of industrial buildings around the bird's natural habitat may be the reason for this decline. Living in grasslands and cattle country this bird loves to be around greenery and other wildlife, especially since it is a bird of prey feeding on small mice and other small creatures of the grasslands.

ELOSH Wild Population Monitoring is now in effect within Ontario. This is a job that requires the monitoring of the existing birds, by identification and banding the birds in order to keep track of the numbers and population growth or decline.

Nests are also monitored as well, the total number of eggs that are laid, as well as the total of birds that survive. Monitoring the birds this way will give conservation officers a better understanding of how the birds reproduce and live as a family unit.

ELOSH Wild Population Monitoring is the best way to understand this bird without making it a captive to traditional facilities and allowing it to stay in its natural habitat.

There are many birds and animals in today world that are struggling to stay alive. In order to protect these animals we are going to have to be proactive in the monitoring and protecting of these animals. Any hunting of endangered species will have to cease in order for the animal population to thrive.

The ELOSH program is just one of many programs geared towards protecting animals in the wild. With the uncertain future of the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike, it may be wise to take a visit to northern Canada or Manitoba to see this amazing bird while you still can, as the future of this songbird is hanging in the balance, between life and death.
