Eco-Degrees: Training to Enter the Green Collar Workforce

The demand for green collar workers is one the rise, and so is the availability of green job training. More colleges are now offering eco-degrees for those planning on entering the green collar workforce. Here are a few of the most popular degrees being offered today:

Environmental Engineering Degrees

Those who wish to pursue a degree in environmental engineering should be prepared to utilize math and science to solve a variety of ecological problems. Environmental engineers gather and analyze data in fields such as wastewater treatment, toxic materials and air quality control. A bachelor's degree is required for most individuals wishing to find a job in environmental engineering, but many continue their studies even after employment.

There are over 150 colleges and universities in the United States that offer environmental engineering courses, not counting those also offered online. Cornell University and the University of California Berkeley are among the most prestigious.

Green Interior Design Degrees

Green interior design focuses on using natural products in the decoration or remodeling of new or existing homes. Instead of using synthetic materials, resources such as wood, stone, concrete or tile are used. Non-toxic paints are utilized, low-energy appliances and lighting are installed and even salvaged or recycled wooden items are re-used to construct new furniture pieces. Students who study to obtain a degree in green interior design will learn how to think smarter, simpler and more natural when furnishing a home.

Collin College in Texas, Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and Bellevue College in Washington State are a few examples of colleges that offer degrees in green design. There are a number of online courses available as well.

Environmental Conservation Degrees

Environmental conservation degrees encompass the mastery of a variety of studies on the outdoors, including fishery management, forest management, natural resources management and wildlife management. Students will learn not only about the scientific aspects of conservation, but also the social sciences as well. Associates, bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees are available in a number of institutions.

The University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Cornell University in New York and the University of New Hampshire all offer environmental conservation degrees.

Organic Agriculture Degrees

As the demand for organic produce increases, so does the need for trained organic agricultural workers. Washington State University is among the leading colleges that offer a degree in organic agriculture. The campus houses a four-acre farm that grows organic vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers in order to give students hands-on experience in organic farming. Studies can be tailored to focus on a specific interest, whether it is dairy farming, crop production or pest management.

The sky is the limit when it comes to training for the green collar workforce. Whether online or on-campus, anyone can acquire the skills they need to obtain an eco-degree.
