According to news reports, positions within the shipyard and dockyard industry require more manpower due to a surge in orders for various seagoing vessels. Thus, if you wish to earn more money and enjoy more benefits, then a job as an electric shipyard operator might be for you.

The career outlook for an electric shipyard operator is good. They make on average $44-$58 thousand a year.

What the Job Is

Generally speaking, as an electric shipyard operator, you will be responsible for the shipyard personnel's safety, effectiveness and efficiency within the shipyard site. Also, you will be required to interact with customers to ensure their satisfaction with the final product.

The shipyard workers for whom you are leader and manager will include project engineers, heavy machine operators, painters, fabricators, welders, warehousemen, and utility workers, among others. As such, your functions entail that you possess the following:

* Practical knowledge of computer technology particularly in auto-cad, office applications and accounting software.
* Knowledge of all things about ships and docks, terminology, operations, repairs, maintenance, and government regulations.
* Applicable knowledge of effective management practices.
* Excellence in blueprint design and interpretation.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in addition to effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills.

And if you want to become part of military shipbuilders, even the Navy, you also need security clearance.

Training/Schooling Required

For most organizations, an educational requirement for electric shipyard operator is a bachelor's degree in engineering, science and technology and other naval-related courses. Also, naval ship experience is an advantage as theory and practice come together in the job.
