Green Careers Guide

Environmental Designer

At the heart of every project is the designer -the person who makes all the decisions. The environmental designer takes that job and goes one step further by making sure that the designs and the buildings that are being erected are as green as possible.

What are the necessary skills or education to be an environmental designer?

A degree from a recognized design school is necessary, as is a degree in green techniques. Additional knowledge of green materials is beneficial as well. The environmental designer must also know how to apply the material so it is ecological.

What makes it green? The use of green choices, green techniques and applying green standards makes the green designer a designation to be earned.

Targeted audience: The targeted audience is those who want their project to be as green as possible. Such people would benefit from hiring an environmental designer. Those who want to incorporate some green influences might benefit as well.

What is the initial income risk?

The first, and possibly largest expense incurred as an environmental designer would be the education itself. With a degree, opportunities will be easier to find. If you prefer to work alone, you would have the associated costs of setting up an office and opening a business in your particular area. These costs would include: the rental of office space, office equipment and supplies, employees, etc. Additional costs would include the license for the business and any other certifications that are required in one's location.

Depending on the location, there may not be the need for an environmental designer. Careful investigation of the economic forecasts of each area before proceeding would serve to minimize the risk. Other risks would include ill thought-out plans, that could cause more harm than good.

What is the market size or market potential?

Depending on the area's size and the prospect of building, there could be virtually unlimited growth for your environmental design company.

Best place to start this business: The best place to start this type of business would be larger areas that have potential for new growth and would need new buildings to be designed. An area that has a history of seeking out green items in the past would be ideal.
