Environmental Engineer - A Dream Job, According to Some

Being an Environmental Engineer is a dream job, according to some. CNNMoney.com lists it as number 5 on their 100 Best Jobs in America list. There's no doubt it's an occupation that's badly needed these days, and one in which there's a variety of occupations that someone with a degree in environmental engineering could do.

What exactly is an environmental engineer? According to Wikipedia.com, it's "the application of science and engineering principles to improve the environment, to provide healthy water, air and land for human habitation and for other organisms, and to remediate polluted sites." In layman's terms, this means that environmental engineers work on air pollution control, waste management, water treatment, and energy conservation.

It's a challenging job but many who are already in the industry say it's fulfilling. It's all about cleaning up the environment and that's something that everyone knows is crucial to maintaining life on this planet and keeping it habitable for future generations.

What are some of the jobs an environmental engineer does? For those in air pollution control, he might use his training and expertise to design a combustion process that reduces air pollutions. If he were in waste management, he would use one of many wastewater treatment technologies to treat and disinfect waste and then release it back into the environment in non-pollutant form. An environmental engineer in water treatment might be involved in locating water supplies, and then in developing ways to store and treat the water. Those in energy conservation might evaluate the potential environmental impact of a proposed project, such as the building of a dam, dredging of a canal, or other project that affects the surrounding area.

Environmental engineers are among some of the highest paid individuals in the country, with an average wage of around $75,000 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It's definitely a career worth pursuing and there seem to be no lack of available jobs. A bachelor's degree is all you really need to get started and according to CNNMoney.com, it's easy enough to get a job without anything more than that, but if you want to start a little higher, or perhaps have better advancement opportunities, a master's degree is worth getting, if you have the time and money to spare in acquiring it.

If you like to travel, you can usually find a job in environmental engineering that requires a little travel; or if not, you can probably get something that keeps you close to home. It's a career path that can take you in a variety of directions, depending on where you want to go. The availability of jobs in this industry makes it easy enough to pursue the avenue you prefer to take. The best part about this chosen career is that it always benefits the environment and the work is all about making our planet safe and healthy for future generations, and that's a job worth doing.
