Waste management affects all areas of our environment, water, air and soil. This is where the job of an Environmental Engineer comes in. They specialize in water quality, solid waste management and hazardous waste management. Environmental Engineers can do the designing, maintenance of systems, programs in the area of air, water and soil pollution, and remediation (which means to make good of something bad) of toxic dumpsites.
Air pollution is when chemicals that can cause harm to living organisms, are released into the atmosphere. Some of the causes are acid rain, smog and openings, thinning of the ozone layer and the burning of exhaust caused by automobiles, industry and homes, Water pollution happens when harmful substances are poured into our water. For example, chemicals, pesticides and oil spill. Environmental Engineers use technology to monitor and regulate the pollution in our waters. Soil pollution is when the soil in a specific area is contaminated. Bad waste management techniques; harmful irrigation, industrial waste, chemicals and pesticides, acid rains and leakage cause it from sewage.
There are a wide variety of jobs available to an Environmental Engineer in many different areas. They work with agencies in the planning and design as well as the operation of sites. They may develop ways for lowering existence of liquid, air and solid waste and the treatment of such. There is also the auditing of industrial sites to determine if they are following codes and bylaws to developing and designing treatment systems. Determining by assessment if operations in the past have directly affected environmental liabilities that need to be changed to lower the severity of the impact. Waste management plans are necessary for industries in order to safely handle waste.
There is the minimization of waste, which is recycling, the treatment of waste, which for example is composting and facilities for disposal like securing landfills. The minimum requirement for education in order to become an environmental engineer is a degree in environmental engineering or chemical engineering. They will be required to know how to use computer models and geographic information systems. Engineers have to stay up-to-date on their knowledge of regulations and bylaws related to waste production and management. Environmental Engineers have a huge impact on the environment. Their work can directly reduce the advancement of global warming which is a very rewarding career.
