Green Career Choices: Insulation Installation Contractor

Installing insulation is a very good way to save energy and save money on the heating bills each winter. Every year, more and more families and businesses have new insulation installed so that they can heat their homes for less money and use fewer resources to do so. The insulation installation contractor helps the families to do this without forcing them to do so themselves.

What Type of Background do I Need?

A background in construction is a minimal requirement. In addition, training in the safe handling of insulation materials and green choices for insulation is a must. Each state has requirements for who can hold a contracting license and if you are working for a company, there might be additional requirements as well. If the plan is to open your own business, a state business license would also be required.

How is it Green?

Insulation materials that are deemed to be green are changing all of the time. What was once the industry standard might be outdated and considered to be unsafe to both the people it surrounds and the environment. New products and materials are being developed that are meant to be safe and efficient.

Who is the Target Market?

Those who would be interested in having insulation added to their home would be those who have outdated or inadequate insulation in their existing home as well as in new constructions. Insulation installers would be needed by both the private and public sector and could also find employment by government agencies as well.

Who is the Competition?

Insulation contractors might find themselves in competition with other contractors as well as others who specialize in this field. As with most industries, the larger companies will tend to dominate an area.

What would it take to open My Doors?

To be successful as an insulation installation contractor, a medium investment would be required initially. Costs that would need to be covered would include:

* A building to serve as the face of the business
* The materials
* The cost of the licenses, registrations and other documents. Check this link for some idea on the cost of various licenses.
* A truck (or several trucks) to haul materials and workers to each job site
* An advertising budget
* A minimal staff, including the cost of their salary

What is the Income Potential?

For each job, the cost would depend on the price of the needed materials as well as the amount of time and labor that goes into their installation. The amount that the market would bear for labor alone would be a deciding factor in determining a base line return on investment; however this figure would depend on the area's own economic standing. The level of new or investment construction might be a good place to start for research purposes.
