Green Dry Cleaning

In the world of dry cleaning, there are two types of people: those who stand by the traditional, potentially harmful processes and those who are embracing the future and the environment by utilizing new chemicals and new, greener techniques for cleaning and caring for clothing. Because consumers dictate policy with their wallets, it is the sincere hope of everyone who is eco-conscious that the majority of people will opt for and demand green dry cleaning.

What do you need to know?

All dry cleaning techniques should be familiar to you, so that you can tell how to improve on them. Green dry cleaning methods should of course be the focus and there should be every effort to modernize the building that you are using, so that you are green from start to finish.

You also need to know how each green cleaning product works with the materials that you will be cleaning. Is there any chance for harm to be done, for instance?

What Are the Initial Investments?

If you are buying or taking over an established dry cleaning operation, you will probably have to upgrade systems and machines to make them green compliant. You will also need to make sure that, if you are adding a different type of chemical to an old machine that there is no potential for harmful reactions, if the old and new chemicals come together. Other investments might include upgrading the heating/cooling system and other improvements to make the building more energy efficient.

What are the Risks?

Dry cleaning may become a luxury item in some parts of the country because of the economy. As more people are forced out of their office jobs, there won't be as many people wearing their business suits as before the recession.

As more people are being forced to choose between electricity and food, they will opt to have items dry cleaned less often. Know your market and the financial climate, before you opt in there.

What is the Competition?

In some areas there will only be one dry cleaner because that is all that market will bear. In other areas, mostly larger urban areas, there may be two or three, sometimes located within blocks of each other. Having the green edge may be beneficial to you in this case.

Why Should People Use this Service?

Everybody has the responsibility to be aware of their impact on the environment. Every time we buy a product or use a service that is not green, we are sending the message that the planet does not matter after all.

Using a green dry-cleaner says that the environment does matter and that you will do everything you can to make sure that every product or service that you purchase knows that and adheres to that concept.

When you offer your services as a green dry cleaner you are doing more than caring for people's clothing. You are showing that you will do your part to keep the planet safe from the start of your day to the end of it.
