The Green Gap Widens

Money Graph

For a long time, the U.S. has been the global center for technological innovation. Following World War II, the U.S. leapt ahead of all of its competitors. Part of that success can be attributed to the Cold War with the Soviet Union. A term that can be found in almost any high school history book, the "Space Race," defines a competition between the two nations fighting for supremacy in space exploration. This contest was fueled by the genius and hard work of scientists actively trying to find the next step, the next great invention, as well as unprecedented spending on education and research development by the government. The Space Race led to the U.S. landing a man on the moon and the world has never been the same since. >More

The Truth About Green Jobs

Solar-Panel

Imagine, going into a computer room prior to the desktop. They took up the entire room! Fast-forward and one can only imagine where we will be. Instead of having the whole roof taken up by solar panels; now it's only an eighth of the size with comparable effectiveness, and completely independent of the electric company. The green energy industry has the ability to revolutionize the way energy is created and transported. >More

Green Jobs are Still Jobs

Solar Panel

The President delivered his State of the Union in great fashion and with much emphasis on clean energy jobs. For those of us who write about this field, we were somewhat disappointed by the lack of use of the term "green jobs." However, it is quite understandable why this phrase was avoided. Green jobs have become a lightning rod for people who want to dump everything that is wrong within the environmental movement into a phrase. >More

How the Green Industry is Becoming Quite Handy

Money Graph

One handyman that has garnered national media attention for his work in salvaging and conservation is Seth Barrett of Brookline, Massachusetts. Barrett opened a small repair shop in 2008 called "Village Green Renewal." Since its inception, members of the community have been bringing in broken items, such as chairs, lamps and toasters, for Barrett to repair. He also makes house calls to fix broken doorbells, doors and other items that are obviously unable to be brought into the shop. Additionally, a number of salvaged items such as tiles, hardware, locks, hinges and other recovered items are displayed in "Village Green Renewal," some of which may be sold, and others may be used in repair projects. >More

Greener Pastures: A Budding Clean Energy Career Market Arises in a Tumultuous Economy

Even as Wall Street regains confidence and U.S. stock and bond trading regains momentum, American working wages are not expected to rise; unemployment is increasing, and the financial outlook for many households in the lower income brackets ranges from grim to dire. Although the stock market has rebounded from the downturn, the stability of the United States economy is still in question. Many economists even worry that the economy could tip into another crash, potentially worse than the previous.>More

U.S. Environmental Policy and Its Effects on the Job Market, 1993-2009

Solar Panel

The Clinton Administration, beginning in 1993, has been credited with several environmental achievements. However, many expressed dissatisfaction with the environmental effects of some of his policies-particularly the North American Free Trade Agreement of 1993, which created friction with several political and social organizations including some environmental special interest groups. NAFTA's perceived negative effects on the environment contributed to the rise in public approval of the Green Party, headed by Ralph Nader. NAFTA is still a controversial policy today, with many arguing that after its initial positive results it contributed to the later recession.>More

Building Bridges: Community Involvement for a Greener Future-And Secure Jobs

Solar Panelling

Throughout the United States and throughout the world, green energy has been rocking power industries-offering higher efficiency, greater environmental sustainability, and lower long-term costs. However, this isn't always the result of savvy new start-up corporations sweeping down into a lucrative new market; local communities large and small have been taking the initiative themselves to develop their own renewable energy infrastructure. This grass-roots movement has grown to a substantial scale, often with outstanding success.>More

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu's Daring New Ideas For Climate Change

Steven Chu

United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu has garnered worldwide attention for his unorthodox ideas concerning climate science and clean energy. Most famously, not long after being confirmed by the Senate in 2009, Chu made a statement that research indicates that because of albedo, the climate-changing effects of carbon emissions could be phenomenally reduced by whitewashing all dark, flat rooftops. This simple, quirky, almost offhand suggestion was successful in mobilizing a substantial number of people to actually experiment with "cool roofs". >More

Latest Study a Relief for Green Energy Industry, Students of Solar Courses

Solar-Panel

ClearSky is an independent research and advisory firm that serves the renewable energy industry. Its earlier work included a study that suggested that the FIT was on course and that Ontario will install an additional 3GW of solar energy by 2015. The firm's latest job forecast is based on information from official sources such as the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) and Statistics Canada (StatCan), but it relies on the assumption that the OPA will continue its current pace of FIT approvals over the next five years. The study shows that not only will the initial increase amount to less than one percent of the average electricity bill, but also, the cost will actually begin to decline shortly thereafter.>More

The Green Economy Is Here to Stay

Solar-Panel

The bulk of concerns regarding Ontario's FIT, which pays producers of energy from sources like solar, wind, and biomass, center around the program's high prices. At its most generous, the FIT pays rates of up to 80.2 cents/kW-hour for solar power, which is many times higher than the current market price for electricity. These general incentives have opened up new opportunities within the province, including solar energy career training for PV installers. Opponents of the FIT ague that these sky-high prices are primarily responsible for a projected increase in residential energy costs, increases that Ontarians have already begun to notice on their bills in the last couple of months. >More

OPEL Changes Name to Better Reflect Role in Solar Economy

Solar-Panel

OPEL designs, makes, and sells high performance concentrating photovoltaic (HCPV) panels and markets solar trackers that maximize the panels' output. The company's HCPV systems are capable of producing up to 40% more kilowatt-hours than conventional silicon technologies. OPEL's Canadian efforts include work with the National Research Council's (NRC's) SUNRISE solar research project, which tests nanostructures for their ability to increase output from concentrator PV cells. The cells capture and convert a wider portion of the light spectrum than traditional panels, which could translate to more jobs for graduates of renewable energy installation training courses as the technology begins to permeate the market.>More

Xmas Gifts that Last Forevery

adopt-an-animal

I know, that's a big statement. But this year, I've really been challenged to find gifts that last beyond the thrill and excitement of Christmas morning and not only that, but that make a difference that will endure past what I will ever see. I've become fascinated with the idea of investing in land and water and air and even people's lives that need my time and money much more than I or my friend need a new ugly sweater or another fruitcake. >More
