There are many kinds of flooring that can be put down in your office, house or other building project. Choosing to have green flooring is a big decision and not one that should be taken lightly. As other materials, there are benefits and disadvantages with green flooring types- and those should be weighed carefully. Discussing what makes one flooring type better than another is part of what makes the flooring profession a unique one. The flooring professional can create for people the kitchen, living room, or bathroom they desire while still remaining ecologically aware. What kind of skills or education should I have for this profession?Because accurately measuring the floors with which you will be working on a daily basis is a major part of the job, understanding math is important. You should also have worked in the industry under a trusted professional for some time so that you know the requisite techniques for a professional, quality installation job. In addition, you should also know something about each of the types of material on the market, both the green and the non-green so you can answer questions and help guide your customers' decisions. Finally, you should have excellent people and communication skills because although you are putting in floors, you are working with people. What certifications, licenses or other professional documentation do I need? You may need a contractor's certificate from the town in which you live. Minimally, you will need a license to conduct business. Each town has different zoning laws and regulations so additional certification may be necessary. What are the risks?Opening a home improvement business is difficult in the best of times. However, during tough economic times it can be almost impossible. On the other hand, if you know you are not going to be able to sell your home anytime soon you might be more inclined to do some renovations. Who is the competition? You will compete against the bigger, more established national companies. You will compete against family owned businesses in your area and you will compete against other companies that are just like yours, small and struggling, just starting out. To keep up with them, you must make sure that you are offering the best products at the best prices with good service, before, during and after the sale.
