Green Packaging Designer

What does a packaging designer do? As the name implies, there are many ways to avoid using Styrofoam to package an item safely and securely. There are many alternatives to these methods- and many companies are switching to more ecologically-aware choices for their packaging needs. How then does one go about becoming a green packaging designer?

The Skills, Knowledge and degrees it takes to become a green packaging designer:

The first thing it takes is having a general knowledge in green materials. How each material behaves, its pros and cons and its cost are also necessary. A willingness to conduct experiments to see which one works the best is also necessary.

The Startup Costs: Most companies would bear the startup costs on their own.

The Competitors: The only rivals in this line of work would be other green packaging designers.

What is the income potential? Depending on how much a company is willing to spend on their shipping materials and safety, the income is virtually unlimited. Some companies ship items every day, others only ship periodically more often than not.

What does it take to get started? In this particular line of work, being either on the direct pay roll or directly subsidized by a larger company is almost necessary to get started. Once you have found the methods that are both green and cost effective, you are able to get started.

How is it green?

The last item that you received in a package was probably filled will Styrofoam peanuts, a lot of paper and a small box packed in a much larger one. Most companies are doing everything that they can to reduce waste, both because of the environment and because it is more cost effective as well. Sending a small pouch rather than a large box is cheaper. Reducing the amount of packing materials used saves money. The greener that the packaging materials can be, the better the environment will be in the long run.

Who is the targeted audience?

The target audience is companies that are interested in saving money and the environment in their packaging and shipping departments. This would include companies of every size, from the smallest to the largest.
