Green Careers Guide

Green Parks Designer

Many people are under the belief that a park naturally occurs. They believe that a park is somehow put together with a sign designating its name and other information. However, a park is actually designed to make the most of the naturally occurring resources, including waterways, hiking trails and scenery. Manmade structures like boat docks, outhouses, cabins, rangers' offices and picnic tables must be designed so as not to disturb nature, but to enhance its appeal.

A green parks designer makes sure that everything that is brought into or used in the park is as ecologically beneficial as possible to the natural state of the park. The green park designer may take into account certain challenges that are inherent and unique in every park system. From keeping the parking lot as far away from the waterway to prevent contamination to keeping the grounds as ecological as possible, it is a unique and rewarding job.

What education and skills should I have?

Education in natural resources management is one requirement. Adding a degree in design may also be beneficial in the long run. You should love to work closely with nature and be a, hands-on person.

Who is the target audience?

The target audience will be national and municipal parks from all over the country. The better you do with each job that you complete, the more clients you will have in a short period of time.

What are the risks to this career?

Current budget cutbacks mean there will be less to spend on our national or municipal parks in the coming years. Some parks have already laid off, all but the most essential of their employees and are only doing minimum maintenance. It is hard to raise funds to beautify or remake a park when so many people are out of work.

What type of licenses or certificates do I really need?

The more degrees and education that you have, the more favorably you will be viewed, especially if have little experience.

What else should I consider?

When pursing this or any other green career - always be sure that you are as ecologically aware as possible. Never be afraid to speak an opinion or offer a suggestion, especially if you think what you have to say is important.
