Green Roofer

A roof is something we pay no attention to, unless there is a problem with it. Maintaining a roof can be a simple task, but one that most of us, put off until our roof is leaking or worse until something has collapsed. When you need a roof repaired, or rebuilt, it is time to consider adding green materials, installed by a green roofer. Finding and hiring a green roofer will save you time and money in the long run because green roofs are built to be durable as well as low maintenance.

What Makes a Roofer Green?

It starts with the way that he handles his business and continues through every aspect of the job at hand. He will need to make sure that he is using green office practices, green shipping and storing methods for his materials and that his vehicle is as energy efficient as possible. He will know the materials and their pros and cons very well and can recommend the exact, right material for your home and area.

Green roofing material that works well on one home may not work at all for another. It is not a one size fits all solution. There are so many different kinds of materials available that there is no way to say that just one is right across the board. For the ultimate in green roofs, there is the living, vegetation roof but that takes a skilled roofer to install.

What Education, Certification or Licenses Do I Need?

First, a general education in construction and construction practices is important. Next, having the certification to call yourself a green roofer is vital as well. You will need a contractor's license and will need to know the general building permit requirements for the areas that you will be called to work in.

What are the Risks?

Construction is generally slower in the winter months, although many people do have problems with their roofs when the snow and ice starts. You may also have slower times when the construction materials go up in price, as well. The cost of insuring your business and the materials can be very expensive to cover and may go up every year.

What is the Market Size or Market Potential?

The market for a green roofer is virtually unlimited. More people are trying to make their homes as green as possible, including rebuilding, updating and upgrading the house they currently own. Starting with a roof can be a very valid way to make an older home as energy efficient as it can be.

Who is the Competition?

Other roofers may be competitive in price, but the green factor will give you the edge in most cases. Your main competition would then come from others who are certified as green roofers as well.
