A windows treatment is anything that you add to your window can include: curtains, drapes, sheers, shades and blinds. There are a wide variety of materials, types and styles of each of these categories from which to choose. The reason that we use each type will depend on the room the window is in, the weather, the season and the time of day. For instance, if you are a night shift worker and you sleep during the day time hours, you will want window treatments that filter out as much light and sound as possible. If you are framing a beautiful view however, you would want to let in the natural light and view and just drape the window for effect. We use window treatments to help insulate the room against extreme heat and cold. We may use them to block light or direct light to one part of the room only. We may also use these window treatments for privacy. What type of skills or education should I have?It is highly recommended to pursue a design degree. Being able to talk knowledgeably about a wide variety of materials is also advisable. Your skills should include the ability to take accurate measurements, to be comfortable with ladders and to be able to hang these window treatments. Also, you should know when you will not be able to physically complete a job safely to avoid any legal disputes. What is the target audience?Anyone who has windows but does not know what to do with them is a potential customer for you. Also, many people who are going to upgrade to make their home more green will be seeking the services of a knowledgeable person in the field. Who is the competition?Because of the many home improvement and design shows on the cable networks, more and more people are convinced that they can recreate some of these looks for a low price. You will also compete with established companies for business as well. What are the risks? You run the risk of not having enough clients to make it through that first year in business. You must know how to seek out the bigger jobs that will bring you the acclaim that you need, so you can compete with the bigger companies.
