There are many ideas and concepts in this world that need to be put into words. Some people are better than others in getting this task accomplished. We call those people writers. In the world of eco-friendly, eco-conscious living, there are green ideas and concepts that need to be put into words. There are some people who can do this better than others. We call those people green writers. What skills do I need? Some of the skills needed are the ability to weave a story, to give information, to educate, to entertain and to make people read whatever you are writing. The ability to do these tasks while being clear, grammatically correct and appropriate in tone is necessary as well. Finally, a little sense of flair is beneficial, especially if you would like to make a living by doing this. What educational background do I need?A degree in journalism, creative or technical writing is not always necessary but can help you get a leg up on the competition. What is the competition like?As with any other creative field, writing is a very competitive business and for every assignment that is available, there is more than likely a thousand hungry writers chomping at the bit to take it. You have to prove yourself with every word that you write and every deadline that you make that you are the right person for the job. What are the risks? If you are relying solely on your writing to pay the bills, you may be eating a lot of ramen noodles if you do not plan to really get out there and hustle. You had better make sure that you have the killer, knock them dead samples in your portfolio and every edge that you can think of. What is the potential pay off?Think about having a career doing what you love to do and being paid for it. Think about never having to go to an office and deal with people that you do not really like for pay you cannot really live on. Think about taking a nap because you are ten pages ahead of schedule and working most of the day in your jammies (bamboo fiber, non-bleached, organic cotton, eco-friendly fuzzy, bunny slippers optional). The potential pay off can be seen more in the satisfaction you have of calling the shots. Monetarily the pay off may be slightly smaller unless you actually do stumble onto a green best seller.
