How Much Learning is Needed to be an Environmental Engineer?
There are many fascinating careers available to those people who are interested in the environment and green issues, and some of these can also be highly skilled and provide you with solid career prospects for the future such as becoming an environmental engineer.
What is an Environmental Engineer?Environmental engineers perform a valuable role in modern times and basically analyze the impact of modern life on the environment, and also the impact of the environment on public health. Environmental engineers can assist governments, businesses and individuals with improving environmental awareness and also advise on aspects of water and air pollution control and hazardous waste management.
How to become an Environmental EngineerEnvironmental engineers need comprehensive knowledge of physics, biology, chemistry and general engineering, and can be called upon to carry out a number of tasks from designing efficient and safe water treatment systems through to assisting construction sites and heavy industries to limit emissions and pollution. Many environmental engineers specialize in certain areas and become expert consultants in subjects such as environmental regulations and responsibilities and hazardous waste management.
The minimum training level required for a career in this field is an undergraduate degree in environmental engineering, which can be obtained from any good engineering university or college, and this type of qualification will provide a good foundation of learning in straight math and science subjects including physics, chemistry, biology and trigonometry.
Environmental engineers must be licensed to work in particular states, and so once you have completed your degree you will need to complete the 'Fundamentals of Engineering Exam' (administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), which will allow you to apply for trainee jobs with engineering firms or big companies. It can take a few years to achieve your full engineers license and typically you will need to complete at least four years worth of working in the field and the second NCEES exam 'Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam'.
Career ProspectsWith so much interest these days in green issues and conserving resources environmental engineering is a rapidly expanding career field and is one of the fasted growing engineering professions in the world, which means that career prospects are good for new graduates and fully trained professionals. The average salary for an environmental engineer will depend on the level of experience and training and also the area in which you are working, but the entry level for the grade of Environmental Engineer I, is around $40,000 to $60,000 a year, with most engineers at this level making on average $46,430 to $56,750 annually.
