How Will Natural Building Differ From Already-Known Methods?
In the past few decades, research and development has been put into improving construction techniques. This new building system is called "natural building", which is a philosophy that places major emphasis on techniques and materials that are environmentally sustainable, culturally sensitive, and relies more on human labor rather than technology.
Natural building has emerged due to a pressing concern for the environment. This is because natural materials are a safe alternative to toxic substances that have lead to pollution. In this method, all materials are locally found so there is less processing, materials are plentiful, recycled, or salvaged so it is not expensive for the community. Examples of materials used include sand, clay, earth, wood, bamboo, rock, rice-hulls, recycled glass, tires, and urbanite.
One of the key features of natural building is that it is still comfortable, healthy, and beautiful without sacrificing the environment. It takes into account the local climate, site conditions, natural ventilation through design, the environment, and the need to lessen operational costs. In addition, alternative sewerage treatment, water reuse, water capture, and energy acquisition are carefully planned.
Energy acquisition is a key aspect in natural building to increase environmental sustainability. This can be achieved by several methods - passive cooling, passive solar heating, hot water heat recycling, insulated glazing, or movable insulation. Technological advances have also helped as there can be power generated on-site by wind generators, micro-hydro, or using low-voltage electricity.
This is the opposite to traditional building methods, which are both energy and capital intensive. Rather than emphasizing on the environment, there is more emphasis on legal, financial, and design aspects. As a result, there is a lot of waste that generally cannot be recycled. A material such as wood was previously chopped down without the thought of whether it was environmentally sustainable. Energy acquisition was also not thought about other than it needed to be plugged into the city's electrical, water, or gas grid.
Fortunately, natural building strategies can be installed into both new and older buildings. Some Governments encourage their people to install these green features to assist minimizing the carbon footprint that would have already been generated from these existing buildings. Some of these green features include rain-water catchment and storage, grey-water reuse, permeable paving, and biological waste-water purification. Campgrounds can also assist by installing composting toilets. Homeowners can assist by making their gardens contain more native plants or at least plants that use less water.
Natural building methods are a revolutionary system that will need to be increasingly employed in the future. As our environment deteriorates due to global warming, buildings have to become more created using environmentally sustainable materials, but it has to be energy efficient as well.
