Green Careers Guide

I-Phone App Developer

At last count there were over 65,000 I-Phone applications with the average user owning $80 worth of them on his phone at any given time. They are constantly being filtered and rotated out to make way for new ones. (TechCrunch.com) Developing new I Phone applications is a technological job that could have far reaching green implications, especially if the new applications are for that purpose.

What do I need for this career?

First, it should be noted that not all science is accomplished by scientists. Many of our common, every day household inventions has come about out of need rather than from education. If you have a good idea for an application, then investigate the steps it would take to present this idea. If you are going to be involved in the technical aspect of developing an idea however, then a degree in computer programming would be advisable.

There are never any stupid ideas.

There are however ideas that have not started off well. Start working with ideas, no matter how outlandish they may seem to you at first. Write down your first thought and then take a step back to see where the idea took the wrong path. Go back to that spot and see what you can do differently. Take a look at some of the other I Phone applications and see which ones are popular now, which ones have remained popular and which ones never really did very well at all. This is market research; looking at what has been and remain popular, you get a feel for the type of applications in which the average I Phone user is interested.

Who is the competition?

Everyone who has an I Phone or would like to have an I Phone has thought about the "perfect" application at one time or another. For many, these are simply passing thoughts that are quickly forgotten. For others, the thought becomes an obsession, then mania and then a quest. In addition to the random thoughts of I Phone users and potential I Phone users, the professional techs at Apple are working on new and interesting applications all of the time as well.

What are the risks?

You may not be successful with your first idea. You try an idea and it gets rejected. The question is whether that be the only idea you have and develop or if you will return to the drawing board and try another, perhaps better idea.
