When it comes to retrofit designer jobs, it can involve re-designing any type of industrial or commercial systems to save energy and perform more efficiently.

The career outlook for an industrial green systems & retrofit designer is good. They make on average $32-$52 thousand a year.

Some examples of industrial green systems might be a new energy efficient metal roof that is made of lightweight, durable, and weather-tight materials or a lighting designer that designs a new lighting system using the most energy efficient bulbs or solar powered lighting systems.

The job entails coming up with ways to make a building more energy efficient, and in some cases, the more efficient systems, such as lighting, can actually give better quality. In the strive for becoming more energy efficient to help meet budget expectations and consumer confidence, many companies pride themselves on stating they are a "Green company", and these jobs are in higher demand now.

Another example of industrial green systems might involve making use of natural light in a warehouse or a living, green systems roof, where you can grow grasses, flowers or vegetable gardens on flat roof tops for energy efficiency, and a fresh supply of herbs or tomatoes for a food facility operation. A runoff water landscaping irrigation system is another example of a retrofit designer drainage system solution.

The type of person these jobs are best suited for are people that have a working knowledge of some of the latest technology applications, whether that be in solar powered lighting systems, or some of the newer, energy efficiency roofing, irrigation, lighting, heating and cooling retrofit designer systems.

The job field typically involves designing energy efficient and retrofit structures on industrial buildings and may involve re-designing several systems in a commercial building for optimal energy efficiency, and a "green" company designation. Depending on what area of expertise you plan to be primarily involved in, an Industrial Green Systems & Retrofit Designer may need a working knowledge that can require 5-8 years to get to the top level of training.

Many people that specialize in industrial green systems of retrofit designer jobs become LEED certified, which is a nationally recognized certification and is becoming a high demand field, and becoming a mandatory designation in some states, like Florida, if you wish to get any type of government business.

These jobs are part of the future occupational fields that should experience growth as we look for alternative ways to save energy or generate our own. They are a career field that should continue to grow since there are many older, non-efficient buildings and systems that can be re-designed for higher energy efficiency.
