LEED Jobs

You say you are considering getting a LEED Certification or just got one? The biggest question in your mind is no doubt "how do I cash in on it?" Is all the work and study to obtain the certification going to be worth the effort? Where are the job opportunities where you can make use of your training? Relax. This is one certification that is going to richly reward you.

"Green" is one of the few economic sectors that are in a period of growth. There are claims that the Federal Government alone has budgeted 8.3 billion dollars in stimulus money for green projects. That doesn't take into account the money being spent on new construction by the building industry. While you're at it, take time to consider all the older buildings being retrofitted for increased energy efficiency. Every time energy costs go up your chances of employment go up with them.

Employment opportunities start with new construction. Employers are looking for people to fill jobs with titles like "Energy Efficiency Consultant" and "Project Manager." High level sales positions are asking for LEED Certification as well. Large architectural firms just about require a LEED certification for lead positions. Even the residential home building industry needs LEED certified managers. The fact of the matter is that any new construction has got to meet LEED requirements. The customers are demanding energy efficiency.

Owners and operators of older buildings are also looking for LEED certified employees. These customers need someone with an understanding of the LEED program to retrofit ageing structures. They also need mechanical engineers who are trained to handle the new "green" technology.

There is a "catch" to this rosy picture. LEED is a certification not an education. You can't be a building engineer if you don't already know mechanical engineering. If you take a sales position you had better now how to do marketing. A newly minted college graduate with a LEED certification is not going to step into a $100K job. On the other hand, getting your LEED certification while you are already in college is a good move. Picking one up in mid-career is almost a requirement.

What can the new graduate expect with a new degree and an LEED Certification? Is it foolish to expect certification to help you at the entry level? Some typical entry level positions include Technical Maintenance Supervisors, Auditing Associates, and Green Building Professionals. The home building industry regularly hires new graduates in the areas of construction management and engineering. Having a LEED certification puts you ahead of your peers. It will get you entry into the larger companies and enhance your future career potential.

If you need any confirmation of these claims it is very easy to check yourself. Run the terms "LEED Employment", "Entry Level LEED" or just "Green Jobs" on your browser. You will get well over one million "hits" returned to you. If that doesn't jump start your job search then nothing will.
