For an item to be labeled "organic" it must be grown with only organic fertilizers and pesticides. Creating these products can be very big business indeed. But, there are a few things that you should know: it isn't pretty or glamorous work. It may be more strenuous than you know and it is not just as simple as shoveling manure from behind a cow. What training, skills or education do I need to have?A degree in bio-sciences, chemistry or both is vital. A degree in agriculture is helpful as well. Finally, you should have a hands-on working knowledge of how a big farm operates so that you can devise the best type of material and the best method for application that will be effective, budget friendly and still qualify it as organic. (It is very important or the farm will lose the organic certification.) Who is the target market? The farms in the area, both large and small that rely on being certified as organic will be the biggest target. However, additional markets can be opened up to the farms that want to cut down on some of their toxic/hazardous product usage but are not necessarily eligible for organic certification yet. (The farm must be pesticide free for a few years before they can be considered for certification.) Private farms may also purchase these items if the price is within their reach. Who is the biggest competition? The commercial fertilizer/pesticide manufacturers have the advantage in being able to produce in bulk, leading to better prices. However, if there items are not technically organic, than the organic farms would not be able to use them at all. Where is a good source of raw materials?Locating next to an aquaculture establishment (a fish farm) would give you access to the fish waste that is filtered and removed from the water before it is recycled and pumped back into the tanks. This fish waste is organic, high in minerals and nutrients and never ending. The larger the fish farm, the larger the supply of raw materials. What can I do to make my business greener?Use only green techniques to develop, test and manufacture the fertilizers/pesticides. Make sure that all travel is done in a green manner. Recycle and use basic green tips in every aspect, at every level of your operation. What is my potential market size? The more working farms you have in the area, the more of a potential market you have. Even if they are not all organic farms, they will all need to have fertilizers and pesticides. If you can show them that yours is the best for the money, you will make a sale.
