Our Storm Chasers-Meteorologists

A meteorologist is someone who studies the atmosphere. It is important for everyone to know our current and future weather events. It enables us to make decisions about our lives with confidence. Being a Meteorologist is not just a matter of looking at a radar picture and telling you what they see. You have to know how to use computer software to help reading the data.

There are weather balloons and satellites that need to be read. Predicting weather patterns and determining when weather warnings need to be issued requires a lot of research of the weather patterns. You have to be familiar with environmental sciences, computer science, and chemistry. Physical sciences, math, physical geology, oceanography, hydrology are also areas that you have to have familiarity with. Meteorologists predict the weather by studying weather satellite pictures and other forms of data that can be done on a computer.

There is more to meteorology than just predicting the weather. There is industrial meteorology, which studies the effects of urban and industry environments on our weather and climate. There are specific studies in climatology, which are weather patterns. Some study pollution and storms and how they affect our climate. Dynamic meteorology is what effects the movement of weather systems. There is a wide variety of jobs in government and private or public spectrums.

Anything that is affected by the weather will require someone who can determine it. Climatologists do a lot of analyzing data from past weather reports. They determine an evaluation procedure for those that are presenting the weather. Weather calendars are put together by climatologists. A dynamic meteorologist helps predict rainfall amounts, winds and temperature. Study jet streams that exchange moisture and heat in the atmosphere.

A physical meteorologist studies global warming and ozone depletion, analyzes the chemical and electrical properties of the atmosphere, examines the formation of clouds and rain and snow. Observing how radiant energy from the sun becomes kinetic energy in the air. Industrial meteorologists work with industries to study the problems associated with pollution and fossil fuel emissions. The ability to accurately determine what weather is coming can either make or break you as a meteorologist.

A career in meteorology requires a BA in meteorology or atmospheric science. You have to have strong interests in science and math. With the weather patterns being the way they are and a lot of severe weather you have to be willing to work 24/7. It can be a very challenging job but if you like the dramatics and variety that a career as a meteorologist has to offer it can be very rewarding.
