To start your green career as a solar and PV installer and roofer, you will need to choose the kind of training you want. Most of the time the training for a career, is a straight path. However, because there are many trades being combined to make this career, you will have many ways in getting to your goal.
A very good place to start is with a 2 year degree in electrical engineering. This can cost a total of around $8 to $15 thousand. If you already have a background as an electrician this can be substituted in lieu of a degree. The opposite can also apply, if you would like to go the electrician route than keep in mind, the apprenticeship may take you longer. The other side of the training needed is the knowledge of roofing. If you have the training already as a roofer, many jobs will teach you the electrical part of the job. If you have the knowledge as an electrician the job will teach you the roof part. Becoming a roofer will take a few years as an apprentice. The exam will cost you around $200. At the end of a few years, regardless of the route you take, you will be trained and ready in this green field.
