Solar Thermal Is the Fastest Growing Industry in the World
Solar Thermal Installers are a small group but are growing. If you want to get in on the ground floor, so to speak, of a growing industry, becoming a solar thermal installer is an ideal opportunity to do so. These guys (or girls) work with their hands, and are very active in the field. No working behind a desk all day, in other words.
What exactly is solar thermal energy?Solar thermal energy harnesses the sun to produce heat. Nowadays, most solar thermal installers are put to work installing systems that heat water, although there are other ways that solar thermal energy can be used.
As a solar thermal installer, some of your job duties might include designing or helping to design pool solar systems, performing maintenance or repairs to existing solar thermal systems, checking the structural integrity of mounting surfaces or deciding the best tilt for solar collectors, connecting water heaters and storage tanks to power sources, determining locations for installing all components, filling and checking all tanks, pipes and fittings for leaks, and installing pumps and plumbing.
Solar thermal energy is such a new industry that a lot of data hasn't been collected yet, but as of now the average wage seems to be around $33,000 a year; not bad considering a bachelor's degree isn't required for this position. There are certification programs available, however, and most companies will more than likely expect you to become certified in the field, although some may be willing to foot the bill for it if you agree to sign a contract stating you'll work for them for a few years after you finish your training. Some companies may even offer on-the-job certification programs. One thing is certain: solar thermal installers will more than likely be a growing job opportunity in the future, as more consumers are turning to solar energy for their energy needs. In fact, solar thermal heat is the fastest growing industry in the world. Not only does it save the consumer money in the long run (after the basic cost of the equipment and installation is paid, the savings are usually significant), but also it helps to conserve the planet's energy resources, which we all know is important if we want to keep the planet habitable for future generations.
If you enjoy working outdoors (and this is where most of your work will take place, so if you aren't an outdoors person, you may not enjoy this profession), and if you are physically fit and like to be active, becoming a solar energy installer may be the perfect job for you. You'll be doing your part to help conserve energy, and making a pretty decent wage at the same time. And by getting in on the ground floor of the industry, your potential for advancement is probably greater than it will be if you join this growing industry later on.
