State of Green Jobs

Green Careers Guide

Last month the President gave the State of the Union. It is now time to look at the State of Green Jobs. Green jobs are solid and growing. Recently the green jobs conference boasted 3000 attendees. Green Careers Guide was proud to be a part of this, and met some extraordinary organizations and leaders that are showing that green careers are strong and rapidly growing.

JobCorps is an amazing program that trains youth in job skills and helps place them into careers. Currently they are underway with greening many of their programs and, with a 90% job placement, are feeding the economy with leaders who can fill many green jobs.

Green Veterans are a growing population. Many times our most under valued citizen are the ones who sacrifice tremendously. Veterans of all wars, including Iraq and Afghanistan, have a much higher rate of unemployment than the national average. The state of green jobs for veterans is extremely positive. With the help of Veterans Green Jobs, they are helping train and place our hero's into career paths. Green vets are also helped by the Department of Labor, Sierra Club, and union groups such as LiUNA

According to a recent study by the Solar Foundation "Solar job growth over the next 12 months is anticipated to be 26%, representing nearly 24,000 net new jobs." Solar jobs are growing at a tremendous rate and will continue to grow despite a recent setback by EverGreen Solar leaving the county.

According to American Wind Energy Association, Iowa should reach 20% of its electricity from wind power. This is an important step because wind turbines are mainly manufactured in the United States and primarily by the USW. As more states adopt a renewable energy portfolio, this will increase the production of turbines. Like any product, the more you produce, the more affordable they become. Wind energy directly affects United States workers positively with manufacturing, delivering, installing and maintaining the turbines.

As in any industry, a trained, educated and skilled workforce is key to feeding the local economy. Community colleges are at the forefront of greening the job force. Since many of the training and retraining of workers happens at college, these institutions have been working with local businesses to ensure that the needs of businesses and workers are maintained. In many instances this means green jobs. The Greenforce Initiative is an investment by the National Wildlife Federation, Bank of America, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Kendeda Fund to work with community colleges to "prepare nontraditional students to enter the green-collar and sustainability job market."

As John Podesta stated at the conference, battery technology is moving from 16% to 40% of batteries produced in the United States. Taking into this manufacturing expansion along with the development of wind and solar technology, green job creation will be on a fast pace to help with an economic recovery. The State of Green Jobs is strong and will continue to grow and help create jobs.
