They make on average $45-$55 thousand a year.What the Job IsA train operator is responsible for the safe, effective and efficient operations of the train system to which he is assigned. The duties include, but are not limited to, thorough checks and documentations of the locomotive's mechanical condition; control and measure the train's vital mechanisms while in transit such as speed, battery charge and air pressure; and make minor train adjustments and ensure the comfort of the passengers and crew. Most importantly, prudent judgment must be exercised at all times. Also, the train system works 24/7, rain or shine, which means that a train operator must be ready to work weekends, nights and holidays even on short notice, not to mention being on the road for days at a time. You also need good eyesight, hearing, color vision and hand-eye coordination as well as manual dexterity, physical stamina and mechanical aptitude. Training/Schooling RequiredYou need to posses a high school diploma, or its equivalent, before you can apply for any job in the railroad industry.
