What do Solar Fabrication Technicians do?

A solar fabrication technician is a very important person when it comes to assembling solar panels. These technicians do not assemble solar panels in residential homes but the bulk of their work is of industrial construction nature. Assembling solar panels in residential homes is the work of another kind of technician. This means that solar-fabrication technicians construct and assemble large solar arrays. But what are solar arrays? Solar fabrication technicians create solar arrays by assembling solar panels. However, they do not create the solar panels themselves. This job is given to photovoltaic fabrication technicians.

Aside from not assembling solar panels, solar fabrication technicians do not do the wiring or do the batteries, because there are electricians who are assigned and more qualified to do those tasks. These solar arrays collect and store energy from the sun and turn it into electricity.

A solar fabrication technician does not mindlessly fabricate solar arrays. The technician has to make sure that what s/he is creating matches the job order specifications. Once job order specifications are received, the technician starts to fabricate the solar arrays using different construction tools and techniques.

Since these technicians assemble solar arrays, they work by cutting, soldering, drilling, painting, bending metals. Doing all of these and more involves knowledge and experience in using construction equipment such as drills, power brakes, saws, soldering guns, etc. Sometimes, they are the ones to pack up the finished product and record the product identification information on the boxes.

For one to become a solar fabrication technician, having the right skills is the foremost consideration to landing this job. But the proper skills should be backed by theoretical knowledge. This type of job is mostly vocational, allowing one to learn all the things that one needs to know in a few months. That is why many companies require you to be an apprentice for a couple of months before you are officially hired as a solar-fabrication technician. To state things in another way, companies would prefer to see your output than your grades. One's output should be precise and usable.

But there are more people who are beginning to see that being solar-fabrication technician is something that is lucrative, hence it doesn't hurt to get an Associate's degree in engineering or material science. As of now, there is not much regulation when it comes to being a solar-fabrication technician. It is a rewarding job for people who want to see instant results of their work as well for the ones who want to work outdoors.
