Many technical schools and community colleges offer associates degrees in these fields, so you can be qualified for licensing in about two years.

Other areas in which it can be useful to have a strong background are in hydraulic or electrical instrumentation, or simply be able to read and understand hydraulic and electrical manuals. The more familiar you are with the terminology and methods of these fields, the more desirable you will be to potential employers.
