Green Careers Guide

Where to Study Eco Tourism?

Hydroelectric power is one of the leading sources of green energy and provides millions of people with their electrical power. As a result, there are many hydroelectric plants with a need for people who can keep all of their equipment running and in good condition. Though the field is rather specialized, those with an interest in this line of work, and who are willing to complete the training will find it to be a rewarding field.

Hydroelectric plant maintenance workers are generally responsible for the repair and maintenance of water-powered electrical generators. They also usually inspect the equipment and perform any needed preventive maintenance as well. The type of equipment that needs to be cared for includes a broad range, such as flood channels, hydraulics, pumps, diesel engines, water transmission systems and electric motors.

A maintenance worker in this field must be prepared to inspect, repair and recalibrate all of this equipment when called upon. They must also be able to quickly identify potential problems and be able to address them quickly and independently. Being self-motivated, with the attitude that you must take ownership of problems as they appear, is a must. It's crucial to be willing and able to prevent and deal with problems before they impact electrical production, which could impact thousands of people.

Since hydroelectric plant maintenance workers need to understand such a variety of systems and equipment, their education must be quite comprehensive. A university degree is not required, but it can be helpful, if it is in a relevant field like the physical sciences or engineering. It is far more important however, to possess the necessary skills and experience for this type of job, and those can usually be acquired in the courses leading to contractor's licenses in the mechanical, electrical or plumbing fields. Many technical schools and community colleges offer associates degrees in these fields, so you can be qualified for licensing in about two years.

Other areas in which it can be useful to have a strong background are in hydraulic or electrical instrumentation, or simply be able to read and understand hydraulic and electrical manuals. The more familiar you are with the terminology and methods of these fields, the more desirable you will be to potential employers.
