Wind Power Turbine Installer - Schooling/Training

Environmentalism is getting a lot more attention these days. It's gone from a largely ignored idea to an important one for everyone. Developing more environmentally friendly sources of power to help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and cut down on emissions is turning into a real industry. That means that there are now careers for people in solar, wind, and other areas. Becoming a wind power turbine installer is a real opportunity.

A university degree will cost around $8 to $15 thousand a year. There are some wind courses available that will cost around $300 to $1500 each.

According to the United States Census, more than seventeen million homes in this country are on land that's appropriate for use of small wind systems. People living in these homes could be augmenting their electricity with that produced by their own wind turbine.

However, most people have neither the expertise nor the inclination to install one. That's why becoming a wind power installation expert is an intelligent choice. As more and more people realize the potential of wind power, they're going to want others to help them build their own small systems. Plus, there are all the commercial applications of wind power, too.

Wind turbines are installed at the top of a tall tower, in areas where the average wind speed is at least nine miles per hour. The energy from the wind is collected by the turbine, and then converted to electricity. This is either stored in batteries on site, or converted to be compatible with the utility provider that services the home and fed into ordinary household wiring. Unused power may be sent back out into the grid, allowing the homeowner to receive a discount on their power bill, or even run their meter backwards.

Training for wind power installation technicians is now available. When looking for a program you can expect the total cost to be around $10 to $15 thousand. Some of these costs may be taken as a low interest loan. If you have some schooling already, the cost may be less with transfer credits. You can even receive a degree in this field from colleges and universities like the Iowa Lakes Community College. Any state where the number of residential and commercial wind turbines is going up will probably begin offering these kinds of courses.

Since the field is so new, courses and certifications will vary significantly. However, you can expect to learn how to install, maintain, and service a modern wind turbine. You'll also get basic information on their construction and operation.

Graduates of programs like this would qualify for entry level positions in the field, as well as having the background and skills to become an operator or supervisor of installation. Both commercial and residential turbines are covered by most programs, opening even more job opportunities up to you.

To complete most programs, you'll need algebra skills, good mechanical know-how, and an interest in learning. There are also workshops available at varying fees for people interested in learning how to install and maintain their own small home wind turbine system, but who aren't interested in becoming professionals.
