Xmas Gifts that Last Forever

I know, that's a big statement. But this year, I've really been challenged to find gifts that last beyond the thrill and excitement of Christmas morning and not only that, but that make a difference that will endure past what I will ever see. I've become fascinated with the idea of investing in land and water and air and even people's lives that need my time and money much more than I or my friend need a new ugly sweater or another fruitcake.

If this idea appeals to you at all, I urge you to look over these next five suggestions. Not only will you be spending your money on something that makes a difference, you do so in a manner that includes a friend in the process too. Plus, you encourage them to do the same on their own someday. It's a win-win situation all around for everyone.

1) Invest in a life with Cows, Chickens & Goats

You may have already heard of this idea, but it's one of my favorites. You can flip through a catalog and choose real animals that will be given to a family and with just one purchase, you enable a family to start providing for themselves, possibly even selling goods like eggs and milk. And, don't let an outrageous price intimidate you, because you can start very small. In fact, the International Humanity Foundation sells chickens in $5 dollar increments, from $5 up to $75. Heifer International offers a huge selection that includes sheep, heifers, goats, ducks, pigs, bees and trees (and many others) that range from $20 up to $500 and beyond. Comes with a gift card to include saying that a gift of a (heifer, sheep, etc.) has been given in their honor.

2) Adopt an Acre
adopt an animal

There are countless organizations that allow you to adopt land, often in the form of an "adopt-an-acre" method that allows one acre of land to be set aside and offered protection for the plants, ecosystems and endangered animals it houses. How fun to give a friend a gift that shows their name attached to an acre in Botswana or Costa Rica! Savenature.org and Adopt.nature.org are two that I recommend.

3) Adopt an Animal

This is similar to the adopt an acre idea, but instead of land on a far-off continent, you adopt a specific animal that's endangered or sometimes a breed of animals, ie: elephants, tigers, etc. It's a great gift for a family! Children will love getting to know their specific animal, the name, the favorite foods, etc., and they can become involved together in making a difference as a family.

4) Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Anyone and everyone will LOVE this gift. Sign them up for a CSA program and they will be spoiled with a new weekly/monthly delivery of incredibly fresh fruits and vegetables that are organically grown with a commitment to preserving the land. While the gift of veggies and fruits is perhaps not one that lasts forever, the impact the gardening has on the environment is, as it is performed in a manner that cares for the land. Not only does it not overuse or drain the land of its essential minerals and nutrients, but it seeks to replenish them. You can also find some CSA programs that offer products like milk, eggs and honey.

5) The Gift of Offset

This year, take the opportunity to help someone offset their carbon footprint! This gift idea allows you to send a friend a certificate (you can even print it from your own computer!) stating the amount of offset that they have contributed to. Check out Renewablechoice.com You can choose from wind power and carbon offsets that reduce normal impact like home electricity, cell phone, laptop, etc. or, choose something more specific like a flight offset gift that is equivalent to a certain number of miles. This would be fantastic for a frequent flyer! Prices start as low as $5 and go up to $144
