At Birthwise Midwifery School we see midwives as spinning a continuous thread through time, maintaining a steadfast tradition of women being with women in childbirth. In their work they have safeguarded the dignity, power, beauty and reverence of this transitional event. We view midwives as protectors of natural childbirth in an age when women’s collective memory of giving birth under their own power is in jeopardy of being buried under modern birth technology. Birthwise participates in preserving and building on traditions of family centered natural birth that have been preserved by our sister midwives before us.

Birthwise offers two arrangements of its curriculum to meet the needs of our diverse student body: the Campus-based Program and the Community-based Program. Both programs are MEAC accredited, offer the same curriculum and prepare students to sit for the national certification exam to become Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs). Explore your options here to see which arrangement works best for you.

The Community-based Program is designed for those who do not want to relocate to Maine for the academic program. The academic program is delivered in 10 two-week intensives over a two-year period while the student is working with a midwife in her home community. This is followed by an additional year of Preceptorship. This program will be offered again starting June, 2010. Application deadline for our 2010 class is March 1, 2010.

Our Campus-based Program begins each September and meets 2-3 days per week. Students begin local clinical rotations in their second and third semester and begin transitioning into their full time preceptorship during the fourth semester by attending 8 weeks of classes at Birthwise and then moving on to their preceptorship where the bulk of the student's clinical experience will be obtained. Students do not attend classes at Birthwise during the Preceptorship.
