Be on the cutting edge of technology with Hocking College’s program in Alternative Energy and Fuel Cells. As the United States strives to reduce its dependence on foreign oil and to reduce greenhouse gasses generated by traditional fossil fuels such as gasoline, a great demand for energy technicians trained to construct, install, troubleshoot, modify, and test multiple types of alternative energy equipment has been created.

Hockings program trains you in non-fossil fuel energy applications. Your course of study includes mobile, stationary, and portable fuel cells as well as solar and wind power as energy sources. A fuel cell is a device that uses hydrogen (the simplest element known to mankind) to create electricity. Fuel cells are being developed to power vehicles, commercial buildings and homes, as well as large-scale usage power plants. Fuel cells are quiet, clean, and efficient. You will not only study fuel cell technology and principles, but will also learn the requirements for configuring and building equipment to test single and stacked fuel cells. The study of commercial, industrial, and residential use of solar electrical systems and wind turbines provides you with a well-rounded background in other forms of alternative energy. System costs, maintenance, and appropriate applications will also be examined. Your studies will also include the production of biodiesel fuel, which is used in the college’s vehicle fleet.
