Natural resources management is the practice of land stewardship of both public and private primarily forested lands for the outcome of reaching a balance of ecological sustainability, economic viability and societal acceptance. It is a science-based approach with a foundation in ecological health, best business practices, professional ethics, traditional values, transparency and multi-stakeholder participation.
Natural resources management focuses on all of the issues linked to healthy ecosystems coupled with human interaction such as habitation, economic resource extraction and recreation as well as the complexities of climate change adaptation. It includes the preservation of wildlife abundance, wildlife conservation, clean water, scenic aesthetics, respect for first nation issues and the continued best practice utilization of wood.
Forestry
HBScF / HBScF (Co-op)
Our HBScF programs are nationally accredited by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board (CFAB). This signifies that graduates meet the academic requirements for membership in the provincial associations in most provinces.
Forestry is about people, science and technology. Forestry applies many natural and social sciences to the management of forests for the benefit of society and the environment.
Lakehead University has been granting forestry diplomas since 1949 and forestry degrees since 1973. Lakehead Forestry has earned a reputation for excellence and is dedicated to the sustainable management of forestry ecosystems.
Forestry in Canada is maturing, and now forests are managed for multiple values, including not only wood products but also biodiversity, recreation, tourism, watershed management and wildlife.
Environmental Studies
BES / HBES (Forest Conservation)
As environmental managers, we seek to understand the fundamental processes and maintain the natural integrity of forest ecosystems. This is a science based program which promotes a solid understanding of the art and practice of forest resource management.
The focus of the Environmental Studies program is to provide a solid grounding in basic forest science with an environmental orientation to problem solving.
