This major brings together agricultural sciences, ecology, and environmental thought to provide the background to issues surrounding the management of land and water to produce food, other agricultural products, and ecological services. Food and the Environment major allows students the flexibility to tailor their learning experiences to their specific interests within the broader topic including resource economics, conservation of wildlife habitat and biodiversity as related to agriculture, integrated agro-ecosystem management, pollution of surface and ground waters, or self-directed areas of study. Students in this major will have the option to gain hands-on experience through an intensive practicum, which will be carried out at the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm.
Career Paths
Sustainable agricultural systems, organic farm management and design, environmental farm planning, government agricultural extension services, vegetable crop management for market gardens.
