Graduate Option Program in
Energy and Sustainability Engineering (EaSE)
at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
The global future will involve complex, interdisciplinary problems in Energy and Sustainability Engineering (EaSE), including the interface between technology and society. An effective education combines a rigorous background in a core engineering discipline with an interdisciplinary knowledge of the issues and fundamental sciences involved.
The new graduate option program in EaSE is designed to provide the components of breadth and depth for students who are enrolled in a departmental masters or Ph.D. program. Participation will not delay a student’s progress or add to the total course load. The EaSE core course is taught every spring semester.
The option program requires completion of:
• The core course set:
– ENG 498ESE, Seminar in EaSE (1 hour)
– ENG 598TSE, Theory and Methods in EaSE (3 hours)
• Two courses from a chosen area of specialization (below)
• A breadth course outside the student’s specialization
The areas of specialization are:
• Biomass Energy Resources
• Geologic Energy Resources
• Energy Markets
• Energy Conversion and Transmission
• Energy Safety and Security
• Sustainable Environmental Systems
• Energy and Sustainability in the Built Environment
The program awards a Certificate in EaSE that will be highly regarded by potential employers.
