The World Medicine Institute offers an accredited Masters degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. It was established to perpetuate a Taoist heritage dating back more than 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty. With a Taoist approach to the art of living in the areas of philosophy, medicine, spirituality, and education, we uniquely offers more than just training in acupuncture and oriental medicine. Additionally, the beauty of Hawai'i provides students with a naturally holistic environment in which to learn.

Curriculum
Chinese Internal Medicine
This comprehensive series of courses presents a study of the history, theories, principles, and terminology of Chinese medicine. Classes focus on diagnosis, differentiation of symptoms, Western disease equivalents, and the diagnostics and treatment of over 100 conditions. After completion of this series of courses, students will have learned all the theoretical concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Taoist Medicine
Introduction to the outstanding achievements and contribution of the Six Taoist Arts to Chinese medicine.

Treatment Strategies
This class provides the bridge between theoretical class presentations and practical application in the Clinical Training and Internship Program. Case discussion includes presenting symptoms, results of diagnostic procedures, Chinese diagnosis, treatment options, and the rationale for the final disposition of the case. If needed, Western diagnostic and therapeutic considerations are also discussed. In this manner, students are given a framework in which they can learn how Chinese medical theory is actually applied in practice.

Biomedicine
This course introduces students to the Western medical system and its integration, or disintegration, with acupuncture and Oriental medicine. This includes clinical skills building and a survey of clinical medicine and their foundation in the biomedical sciences. Students will develop the clinical skills of history taking, the Western physical exam, and laboratory and advanced test usage in the diagnosis of disease in the Western medical model. The course is predominately lecture-based, but includes independent research, problem/case based didactic sessions, case presentations, and field trips to Western medical institutions.

Clinical Internship
Clinical Training and Internship provide valuable hands-on experience and education that complements the academic side of the Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Degree program. This practice is required by CAHM to qualify for graduation and to satisfy state and national requirements. Through clinical practice, a student becomes a true practitioner of Chinese medicine.
